KAHELELANI SHELLS
The Kahelelani Shell - One of the most sought after “gemstones” in Hawaii. While they are found on most of the Hawaiian islands, they are most abundant on Kauaʻi and Ni‘ihau. They are very tiny and therefore the most difficult to collect and sew. Kahelelani Shell jewelry were once worn only by the highest members of society, such as the Ali'i (ruler) and the Kahuna (person in charge). They are believed to offer their owners a direct connection to the people of Hawaii and the beautiful 'Aina (land). Most of the Kahelelani shells used in our jewelry are collected at the beaches of Kauaʻi. However, we do purchase shells from Ni‘ihau a few times yearly to create with or upon request. We only select shells that are free of any holes, chips, and cracks. Our jewelry is made with shells that are uniform in size, which is an important feature that helps determine the symmetry of the piece.
SUNRISE SHELLS
The Sunrise Shell (Langford Pecten) - An extremely rare and sacred shell from Hawaii, containing every color of the spectrum, but predominantly occur in yellow, orange, pink, and white. They are very hard to find and were once the exclusive property of the Hawaiian royalties. Their name was given because they are often found at first light on the beach. Nowadays, they are usually dove for. We work closely with local divers to source the best quality Sunrise Shells that are free of holes, cracks, and blemishes with distinct tiger stripes on both sides. *No live shells ever taken!
